First look: Archos AV700 (PVP)
Archos’ huge PVP (weighs 107×209x19mm, measures 590g) comes in 40GB and 100GB versions. When connected to the TV docking pod (included), it can record video from TV and DVDs (copy-protected ones even, since it’s Macrovision compliant) using the built-in scheduler utility. The large screen (7-inch, 480×234, 262k colors), while not quite up to PSP standards, gets the job done. MPEG-4, DivX, AVI and protected WMV files are all supported. Thanks to the built-in stereo speakers, you don’t need to plug in your headphones to listen, and when it comes to audio support, there is Janus (Windows Media DRM 10) support so your tracks from subscriptions services will play just fine. The AV700 can autosync win Windows Media Player 10, and it’s also got a USB On-The-Go port, so you can directly transfer those pictures from your digital camera. The battery is removable and its life is rated at 5 hours for video.
Really pricey at $657.30 (for the 40GB), but then again it’s a niche product and its recording capabilities set it apart.
