Synaptics’ technology not in use in iPod nano

For their latest iPod model, Apple didn’t go with Synaptics, whose scroll-touch wheel technology is used in the full-sized iPods and iPod minis. Instead, as reported by MarketWatch, they chose to partner with Cypress Semiconductor, whose work is also employed in the latest PowerBook models, introduced in February.

Synaptics CFO Russ Knittel told the investors the bad news at the Silicon Valley Bank Conference (“we believe its uses an alternative solution”) and the company’s share fell 36 cents (2%) to $17.99. And while the Apple deals are to thank for 29% of its revenue, Synaptics is far from doomed, as 52% of its sales come from laptop components. Additionally, Synaptics provides other big-name MP3 player manufacturers with touch-based navigation systems, such as Creative Labs (see touchstrip in their latest Zen models).
