Free download: Harvey Danger’s “Little By Little…”
Indie band Harvey Danger is offering their third album “Little by Little…” as a free download. Their explanation for doing this is a reading worthy of your 2 minutes, and sure to boost your appreciation for these folks.
As Andy notes: why haven’t more indie artists done this?
You can get it via BitTorrent or directly from their website. What boggles the mind is how technically savy those guys are:
Bittorrent MP3 is LAME 3.90.3 encoded, using the variable bit rate alt-preset-extreme setting. Bittorrent OGG is encoded with oggenc using LibVorbis v1.1.1, using the variable bit rate --q7 preset. Direct download is LAME 3.90.3 encoded at 160Kbps.
Woah, LAME 3.90.3 and *—apx*, what more can you ask for? Understandably, the direct download offering is of a slightly lower quality, since the burden on their servers should be heavy and, at any rate, we should count ourselves lucky for even getting ‘direct download’ as an option.
Download the album, and please consider contributing to them—you’re not only showing your appreciation for the music, you’re sending a message:
- to them: that you appreciate their move to offer their work of labor for free
- to the record industry: that the universe won’t collapse if they stop being dumbasses for a change
