AOL buys MusicNow
AOL bought Circuit City’s MusicNow digital music service for less than $25M according to insiders.
The service, with a catalog of more than 1M songs, will be rebranded as “AOL Music Now” and will offer $.99 tracks for purchase and a $10/month subscription plan which goes up to $15/month (a la Napster, Rhapsody, Yahoo! Music Unlimited, etc.) if you want to transfer that music to your WindowsMedia DRM10-compatible MP3 player.
According to the company’s spokesman, Nicholas Graham, the deal with Apple which allows AIM users to log into the iTMS with their username/password “has been fruitful for both companies, and will continue”.
