Australia: MP3 player market stats
Everybody loves lists, right? Thanks to The Age’s article [via], we’ve got a bunch of data on the Australian MP3 player market. Here we go:
- more than 400k Australians may be buying an MP3 player during the holiday season
- more than 6 out of 10 MP3 players sold are iPods → more than 8 out of 10 bucks spent on MP3 players go to Steve’s pocket
- biggest sellers behind the iPod: Creative, iRiver
- 2004: 174k players bought during the first nine months; 364k players sold during the last three months of 2004— 67% of the year’s total sales (according to market research organisation GFK Australia)
- 2005: 1.1M players sold during the first nine months; total sales for the year may rise up to 1.5M devices (GFK estimates, again)
- Australia is the third largest install base when it comes to iPods
iPod accessories:
- a $10M market worth in Australia—that number blows my mind
- dominated by Griffin, XtremeMac and DLO—these account for 70% of sales
- on average, an iPod owner buys three accessories per device
