CES 2006: Toshiba’s PMP, the Gigabeat S

Toshiba Gigabeat SToshiba’s Gigabeat S (videopictures) seemed to be one of the best products displayed at CES.

First reports claim this PMC’s 2.4-inch (320×240) QVGA LCD does a fine job displaying DRM’d MPEG-2 videos—so it’ll work with video subscription services such as Vongo—as well as TiVo Series 2 downloads. The device, which feels light and sturdy, runs on Microsoft’s Portable Media Center software. Its battery life leaves no-one complaining with 20 hours of audio or up to 5 hours of video playback. It’ll come in two capacities (30/60GB) and three colors (metallic blue, piano black and piano white). Oh, and there’s a FM tuner inside.

Expected in spring: $300 for the 30GB version, $100 more for the 60GB version.
