Fraunhofer has released version 2 of its MP3 Surround Evaluation software
The app features Ensonido, which allows the playback of surround files over stereo phones, and the MP3 Stereo eXtended converter which “upgrades” your stereo MP3s to surround ones.
There’s even a MP3 surround comand line encoder available for download. The bit rates for surround MP3s are supposed to be comparable to those for regular ol’ stereo ones. It’s worth noting that MP3 surround files are backwards compatible—“a legacy MP3 device plays back MP3 Surround as high quality stereo.”
You can download the app (plus some demo MP3 surround songs) here. According to the minimum requirements, you’ll need a modern OS and at least a Pentium III 1GHz or similar to give it a shot.
