Briefly: [Reviews] Samsung YP-Z5, iPod Hi-Fi, Sennheiser CX 300, iAudio F1

  • Samsung YP-Z5: an overall positive impression on this iPod nano competitor. There’s not too many extras here to brag about, but the iPod dogma is all about offering less, right? The device looks and feels great, the UI is a joy to use. The amp could use a little more power, but hey, if you’re into using bigger headphones you’ve probably got a separate amp laying around. The device was first presented by Samsung at CES 2006.

  • iPod Hi-Fi: “The pricey Apple iPod Hi-Fi portable stereo speakers are well built and sound great, but they don’t bring anything new to the table.”—sums it up rather well I’d say. Also: PC Magazine’s review. Read our initial take and thoughts on the iPod Hi-Fi.

  • Sennheiser CX 300: good performers in the bass department, but CNET states the obvious “the CX 300’s sound is nowhere as clear and open as that of our favorite Shure and Etymotic models”—which is to be expected when you compare a $70 (black/silver) pair with others costing 2 or 3 times that. We’ve presented the CX 300 model a few weeks ago.

  • iAudio F1: feature-packed and good looking, but the decreased battery life (14h in the tests, instead of the claimed 22h), lack of DRM support and proprietary USB cable give it a 6/10 rating.

  1. About the CX300’s – They can’t compare to top end phones but for the money they provide a good quality of sound and the design is quite funky, and comfy because unlike other ‘ear canal’ phones these don’t fit totally in your ear.
Based on the price these are defiantly good every day phones.
