Release: Koss Pro4AAA Titanium headphones (plus, a discount code to get 20% off)

Koss Pro4AAA TitaniumKoss has released what looks the like open-design cousin to the MV1, the Pro4AAAT. Impedance at 250 Ohms, MSRP is $150 and, as is the case for all Koss headphones, it’s covered under a “No Questions Asked” lifetime warranty. From the company’s press release:

The PRO4AAAT features titanium coating on 2 mil mylar diaphragms for a frequency response of 10-25,000 Hz. Oxygen-free copper voice coils improve signal transmission and conduction for accurate sound. Computer optimized ferrite magnet structures provide deep bass and treble clarity. Closed, vinyl PneumaliteTM ear cushions seal tightly around the ear for improved isolation and maximum bass. Designed for ultimate durability for home or everyday studio use, the PRO4AAAT stereophone incorporates an extra-wide, adjustable steel and rubber headband design that further ensures comfort during long listening and recording sessions. The earcups also fold flat for convenient travel and storage. The PRO4AAAT comes with a sleek case for protective portability.

Still to early for proper reviews to show up, but early feedback has it that while they look good and feel solid, the sound is a bit veiled. Not the best way to start they hype-machine rolling, but we’ll see.

Meanwhile, Koss let us know they’re offering a 20% discount for this release till the end of May; just enter coupon code 052406 during step 2 of checkout.

  1. Looks cool.

Mylar diaphragms for a frequency response of up to 25,000? Sure, why not. I’ll let my bats have a go at these cans.

I used to have a Koss in the 70s and 80s which was great – and I wore it out until it literally fell apart – but I haven’t had one single more than decent one on my ears since.

I wish they would stop coming up with cool stuff and actually produce something that can really compete with Beyer, Sennheiser and the like.

Early opinions I heard around the shops here were just negative, across the board. Also, I’ve heard that they are not supposed to be suitable for longer listening sessions because of the (closed) concept … too tight.

Not that I’m lookin g for a new pair. My Sennheisers will do for another decade or two.

  2. Heh, I’ve only let the 25 KHz bit because I was quoting the press release. I usually either skip these, or insert a snarky comment along.

Regarding Koss, I think I agree. The only successful model I can think of quickly right now is the Porta Pro, and this is a low-budget phone.

Which pair of Sennheisers do you own?

  3. The Porta Pro also sucks. ;)

I buy all the Sennheiser 545s I can find for my drum set (my Roland V-Drums just sound best on those cans), I have a pair of HD 590, one pair of HD 600 and one HD 650.

Do you think that’s excessive? (blush)

  4. No, I think Sennheiser should put your in their latest ad or something—try out a pair of BeyerDynamics for a change!

  5. I have tried them and, don’t laugh, if I didn’t have so many Sennheisers … :)

  6. They look nice, and apparently produce some nice sound too but I will stick with my faithful Sennheiser at the moment. :)
